We are thrilled to announce @miaghogho as the first artist-in-residence for our debut Berj Residency Programme in Busua! This initiative, launched by the Joyce Quarshie Foundation as part of the Hannah Kudjoe project, aims to honor the legacy of Hannah Kudjoe by promoting the arts in her hometown, Busua. The program also serves as a platform to support women artists and socio-political creatives.
Mia Ghogho, an artist currently based in both Chicago and Accra, Ghana, draws inspiration from her upbringing in rural Mississippi, where she is a third-generation descendant of a matrilineal line of quilt makers. For the past week, she has been living and working in Busua, creating in the birthplace of Hannah Kudjoe and in Odo Valley—a farm home designed by Jean-Baptiste Anzn, known for its unique bioclimatic architectural features, experimental food forest, and regenerative agriculture.
This serene space, nestled in a forest and featuring clay sites and a sculpture workshop, provides the perfect environment for Mia to explore themes of regeneration in her work. Her creative process involves scavenging and assembling various motifs and materials, resulting in a multidisciplinary studio practice that spans both painting and sculpture.
After her residency in Busua, the Gallery will host a solo exhibition of her work in our Accra space.
