BETTY ACQUAH | Berj Art Gallery | Ghanaian Artist
Artist
Betty Acquah, a distinguished Ghanaian artist, was born on March 20th, 1965, in Cape Coast, Ghana. Her artistic journey is marked by a deep reverence for the ordinary woman, whom she considers the unsung heroine of our era. Through her vibrant canvases, Betty captures the trials, ambitions, celebrations, and triumphs of these women, weaving their stories into the fabric of her art.
Academic Pursuits
Betty's artistic odyssey began at Wesley Girls' High and Holy Child Schools in Cape Coast. She further honed her craft at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, achieving a First Class in the B.A. Hons (Art) Degree course. Her pursuit of excellence led her to the M.F.A. (Painting) Degree program at the same institution, following an interim Professional Art course at the Tokyo School of Art (T.S.A.), Tokyo, Japan.
Artistic Technique
Betty employs the pointillist technique in her oil and acrylic paintings, using shadows and points to convey profound feminine themes. Her process begins with a small sketch in a pad, which then evolves onto the canvas. With meticulous precision, she applies random colors on primed canvas, followed by a second coat of a specific hue depending on the theme. The sketch is then transferred onto the canvas through a series of tiny, almost imperceptible dots in a darker shade.
Exhibitions
Betty's influence transcends borders. Her first solo exhibition was featured at PAFAM (Pan African Festival of Arts and Music) held at the Trade Fair grounds in Accra. Subsequent exhibitions at the AMAHEMA Art Gallery and collaborations with eminent Ghanaian painters solidified her position in the art world. Her works have graced exhibitions in India, Japan, Nigeria, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S.A., reflecting the universality of her themes.
